Is your family getting enough exercise? Do you sit in a work chair for hours throughout the day? If so, you are not alone.

Nowadays Children and adults lack adequate exercise and sit more than ever. The rise in stay-at-home school and work is contributing to the development of unhealthy postures. Your body posture affects your health, energy levels, and confidence. Bharatanatyam dance is an excellent form of exercise to decrease bad posture and improve good posture.

What is good posture?

Having good posture is an informal way to say you have correct body alignment.

Correct body alignment is keeping your head, shoulders, spine, hips, and knees in a straight line.

Keeping your body straight and aligned does not mean being perfectly straight like a whiteboard. Rather “straight alignment” is the capacity to keep your body sufficiently straight, permitting the normal arches of the body to exist effortlessly. This technique will keep your muscles balanced and minimize the risk of pain and injuries. Strive to have good alignment while sitting, standing, or lying down.

How does Bharatanatyam improve your posture?

Bharatanatyam improves body posture by strengthening the core.
Your core is your abdominal muscles, back muscles, and breathing muscles. When your core lacks strength your spine will arch too far forward or backward. The result of this is back pain and injury.

Bharatanatyam dancers develop strong cores resulting in healthy alignment. The Guru’s first job is to remind dancers about their alignment until good body posture is habitual in class and outside of class.

How long does it take to notice improvement?

When you start Bharatanatyam dance you will instantly notice an improvement in body posture on the first day. It takes 4 weeks of regular practice to begin to develop the long-term core strength to maintain your good posture in other areas of your life.
