If you had a chance to watch an Indian inspired dance via Broadway, Hollywood, or Bollywood, you may or may not know that Bharatanatyam technique is probably the origin of that work.

Bharatanatyam is falsely identified as “Bollywood Dance.”

Bollywood dance – often depicted in mainstream media – is a fusion of multiple Indian, eastern, and western styles of dance.

Though Bollywood is a beloved and amazing performance style, its precursor and inspiration is Bharatanatyam.

Bharatanatyam is a form of classical Indian dance that originated in Tamil Nadu, India.

This ancient art was originally practiced in Indian temples/courts as a display of adoration and admiration of Hindu Gods.

It takes 5,000+ hours for a student to master Bharatanatyam and its intricate techniques.

The Bharatanatyam movement technique is composed of abstract and expressive movements. Expressive movement entails specific body poses, hand positions, and facial expressions that hold symbolic and thematic significance. Abstract movements emphasize musical elements and choreographic embellishment.

Students of all ages who study Bharatanatyam reap benefits such as:

  • Fine and Gross Motor Skill Advancements
  • Developing storytelling and communication skills
  • Self-discipline, respect, and teamwork.

Traditionally, students start classes as young as 5 years old and train under the tutelage of a Guru.

Normally, Bharatanatyam is performed by women, but men are encouraged to study Bharatanatyam dance techniques as well.

Whilst performing, students wear a traditional Bharatanatyam costume that may include (but is not limited to):

  • A Saree
  • Pants or a Pleated Skirt
  • Temple Jewelry
  • Salangai/Gunghroo (Leather Anklet)
  • Alta

Traditional Bharatanatyam dance is performed to Carnatic music, a style unique to south India.

Modern day Bharatanatyam dance schools such as The Ishana Dance Academy explore various forms of Indian music.

Ishana Dance Academy is dedicated to empowering students through the development of performance skills and self-confidence via Bharatanatyam.  To get started on your Indian dance journey, email  info@ishanadance.com to learn more about classes for dancers of all genders and ages.
